Day 289 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had another good day today – CNS-speak for minimal behavior problems.

After he returned from the clinic, he rested on the couch and read a magazine. He received a special treat when the residential director brought by a brand new DVD of Grayson's favorite movie of the summer – Marmaduke. What a treat! He watched half of it, then did his chores (trash, mail, therapeutic home program) and prepared dinner. After dinner he finished the movie.

I spoke with him after he was in bed and listening to his audio book. I asked him if he watched a movie tonight, and he said "yes". When I asked which one he said, "I don't know". I said "dog" and he responded "Marmaduke". Prompting worked!

Day 288 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had a good day today. He did much of the usual – chores, laundry, trash, dinner prep. After dinner Grayson and his roommate played Uno with their residential assistant (RA). She said that they were conspiring to bend a few rules and that she thought that was quite funny. The minds were working!

I spoke with Grayson just after he laid down for bed but had not yet gone to sleep. The cordless phone was broken so he had to hoof it into the kitchen to talk to me on the wired headset. He chatted for a little bit then wanted to get back to bed – and his audio book!

Counting down to the first home visit!

Day 287 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

We drove up to visit Grayson for the last time today. The next few times we drive to Bakersfield it will be to bring Grayson home for a visit. He will move back in with us in the next few weeks. The Centre for Neuro Skills will be making a visit on Friday to assess our home for suitability for caring for a brain injured patient with some serious cognitive deficits. We think that we are almost ready but our assessor will be the judge.

We had a very nice day with Grayson today. Since this was our last visit, we decided to go to Moo Creamery for lunch. The food there is great and the ice cream is from another planet. Nowhere else in the world have I tasted ice cream with such vibrant flavor. With such beautiful weather today (in the low 80's) we ate outside and had a simply delightful lunch.

We did run a few errands after lunch. The most poignant one was the purchase of an in-drawer knife block. Due to Grayson's impulse and safety issues, we will now be storing our kitchen knives out of sight in a drawer.

We took our last swim by the pool this afternoon. We were in the pool area for a few hours but the outside temperature was so unseasonably cool that we spent our time in the sun instead of the water. Since we started enjoying the pool on "opening day" this season the lifeguards, like many of the staff, have become extended family. We will miss them!

It may have been a day of "lasts" but we look forward to all of the firsts yet to come.

Day 286 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had a good day today. He did his grocery shopping in the morning, labeled and put his food away after shopping, swept and mopped the floors, and did a bunch of laundry. He had no behavior problems today.

This evening, the "Generation Y" (a.k.a. the Millennial Generation) crowd went to a social event at IHOP. Grayson was excited about this event and ordered pancakes, eggs and sausage – he was a happy camper!

I chatted briefly with Grayson tonight after his event, and made sure that he knew that we were coming for a visit tomorrow. This will be Grayson's last weekend at the residence, as he will be making home visits in the weeks to come in preparation for the transition to home care.

Day 285 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

It's Friday night – Movie Night! I called to talk to Grayson and he was at the movies. This is good news, because the simple fact that he was still out tells me that there were no behavior problems.

We are busy preparing for Grayson at home on multiple levels. His room is about finished and we are holding a garage sale tomorrow to remove 25+ years of collected "stuff" from the entire family (including my parents). We are in the legal process of filing for a conservatorship so we can manage Grayson's affairs and we also applying for Social Security benefits for Grayson. Lots of balls in the air – and we both have busy jobs!

Enough about us – we are fortunate to have Grayson with us at all. Thanks be to God!

Day 284 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had a good day today. There was nothing special or extraordinary about it, but life is generally made up of glorious but relatively unremarkable days. Unless you reflect on how remarkable the gift of life is, it just whizzes by.

We spent the evening eliminating clothing that no longer fits Grayson. Since his injury, he has lost 70 pounds, and most of his pre-injury clothing is going into storage. His closet now looks like something out of a closet organizer ad – lots of room and very organized clothing.

First overnight home visit will be the 4th – racing to get ready!

Day 283 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today is Wednesday – Order In Night! No cooking for the residents tonight. Grayson had a sub sandwich from Sub Station. After dinner was another treat – Bingo Night at the rec center. Grayson, usually the one with a short attention span, stayed at it for an hour and a half. He never got to yell "Bingo!" but whenever a number was called that he had, he would shout, "Got it!" I asked his residential assistant (RA) if that was the way the game is played and she said no, but that anything that made Grayson more verbal was a good thing!

We had our patient conference today and it is now certain that Grayson will transition home within the next few weeks. He will have a few overnight home visits on weekends before he moves home later in September. More on this topic as we get closer to the transition. I'll share highlights of the patient conference as soon as I've had a moment to digest the data.

Day 282 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

When I called tonight, Grayson was in the rec center for Karaoke Night. This has become a big event weekly at the center and now quite a few patients from the residence come to the event along with several others from the outlying assisted living houses in the neighborhood. The bottom line – the rec center is packed with people. Grayson was, in the words of his residential assistant (RA), a "perfect angel" tonight.

One of the disadvantages of this being so large an event is that Grayson no longer sings. He has become increasingly less vocal over the past several months, most likely from everyone asking him to repeat himself. I think that he has given up for a while on being verbal. While Grayson was never afraid to perform in front of a large crowd, it is clear that he has lost the confidence he once had due to the way he thinks he sounds.

I called back after he arrived back at his apartment and I spoke with him while he was laying down listening to his audio book – probably the 30th day on chapter one. With his poor short term memory, the same chapter is a new book every night. When I asked him what he did tonight, he didn't remember going to the rec center or listening to karaoke.

We are really feeling the pressure that Grayson will be coming home in the next few weeks. We have a patient conference tomorrow and I expect that we will know a lot more after that.

Day 281 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

When I called this evening, Grayson was at the rec center having cake and ice cream! One of the patients was celebrating a birthday, and in the CNS tradition, all of the residents were invited to the party. One of the reasons that I will really miss this place is that there are many people there that have conditions similar to Grayson. The patients have enriching activities, caring people to watch out for them, routines that are healthy and focused, and lots of staff looking for a way to make things better, or ways to improve the quality of the lives of their patients. This is a special place.

I talked to Grayson late tonight. He sounded more alert than he should have been at 9:30 – 90 minutes past his bedtime! Perhaps the sugar from the cake and ice cream had something to do with it?

Today was another good behavior day – Yeah! Let's hope and pray that they continue.

Day 280 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today Regina and I made the trip to Bakersfield to visit Grayson. He was excited to see us when we arrived and he had a bit more energy than he has had the past visit or two. He was happy, interested in what we were doing, and had a voracious apetite!

We were pleased to hear that Grayson's behavior over the past few days has been very good and that he even got right up from bed this morning, something that the staff is certainly not used to!

We went to lunch at Chipotle and he polished off a burrito bowl as Regina and I decided that we could split one in the future. We ran several errands this afternoon, none of which Grayson found exciting, but he was engaged and observant the entire time. After our errands we enjoyed a treat as we usually do. Today Cold Stone Creamery was Grayson's choice.

After our treat we went back to the residence to take a swim and play in the pool. This is good for Grayson. He still has difficulty getting into the water and appears quite unsure of his footing on the steps getting into the pool. Usually slow encouragement to bend his knees and step down does the trick. The pools there are only 5 ft at the deepest point and Grayson spends much of the time half out of water due to his height! One of these days he may even try to put his head in the water but we are not there yet.

We left this evening as Grayson was sitting down for dinner and starting the wind down for the day. It was a great visit today!

Day 279 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Tonight Regina and I attended an event at church – a farewell to our long-time friend and music director. It was a bittersweet event – great to see all of the musicians at our church who we have missed so much these last nine months, but sad to see our music director and his wife (also a mover and shaker in the church) leave. The only thing constant in life is change. Sometimes it is welcome – sometimes not. This couple and the gifts they brought us will be greatly missed.

We were again deeply touched by the outpouring of love and concern for Grayson. We were able to tell everyone tonight that they would be able to see him themselves in a few weeks when he starts home visits in preparation for the transition to home care.

Tomorrow morning Regina and I are off to Bakersfield for a visit with Grayson!

Day 277 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Well, today started out as a challenge, but ended pretty well. Grayson had some behavior issues this morning with his favorite residential assistant (RA), but when he arrived back at the residence this afternoon he was a model citizen. He did his cleaning chores with minimal cueing, did his laundry and prepared dinner. I spoke with him as he was getting ready for bed at 7:30, but he was so intent on listening to his audio book that I couldn't carry on much of a conversation. Perhaps tomorrow.

All's well that ends well!

Day 276 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had another challenging day today. Behavior was a problem this evening. Unfortunately his primary residential assistant (RA) had to leave early, so I was unable to get a complete report. I only know that there were several issues that had to be dealt with.

It does appear that Grayson's behavior runs in cycles. We had a challenging cycle in June, a great cycle in July (one of his best) and now a challenging cycle starting the last week or so. Perhaps the challenging cycles are the awakening of new areas of the brain that Grayson has to learn how to deal with – growth causing agitation followed by adaptation and outward improvement? Only God knows for certain, but I like my version!

Day 275 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today Grayson was just a bit off his game. He was agitated from the time he got up, and had some minor incidents of behavior throughout the day. He shook a fist at someone on the morning shift at the residence, he was head down at lunchtime, and he took a swing at someone in the afternoon shift at the residence. In all cases he was redirected and got out of whatever particular funk he was in at the time of the incidents, but it is still a setback.

These pesky incidents get in the way of some of the good things that Grayson is doing – he made dinner, went to the park and watched kids play, took out the trash – the usual stuff, but good stuff. When I talked to him tonight, he was reading his xkcd comic book and chuckling. I told him that we had found the Calvin and Hobbes comic book from my parents house, an old favorite of his from his early years. He was thrilled!

Let's pray for a better day tomorrow!

Day 274 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had a good day today – one with no behavior problems. He spent some time after dinner tonight at the park watching a pick-up soccer match with his residential assistant (RA). He seems to enjoy watching the activity while sitting quietly on the park bench. When I spoke with him tonight, he was snuggled in bed and listening to one of his audio books.

This morning marked the 9 month point since Grayson's injury. He has recovered much of his physical capability, and for that we are grateful. It is tragic that his cognitive abilities are so severely challenged. It is easy to slip into wishing for what might have been, but that path is no longer an option. We continue rejoice in Grayson's successes and pray that he will continue to maximize his quality of life. We are approaching a crossroad in our lives – preparing to bring our son home to care for until we are no longer able. The Lord has provided much for us these past 9 months. We trust that he will continue to care for us as we are about to embark on this new adventure.

Day 273 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had another good day today. This morning he slept in a bit (until 8:00 AM) then he got up and ready for his day. After the morning routine he took out the trash, brought in the newspaper (a Sunday treat) and did some laundry. After lunch he went to the pool for an hour and a half. After he got changed back into clothes he went for a walk in the park. He did a few other cleaning chores in the afternoon then started dinner prep. Under the watchful eyes of "the" residential assistant (RA) Grayson made a casserole for his roommate and himself tonight. After dinner he read his xkcd comic book then went to bed listening to one of his audio books.

The reason I said "the" RA, is that Grayson is now sharing an RA with his roommate. While he no longer has a 1-on-1 RA, it is a demonstration of just a bit more improvement that it is no longer required while at the residence. Another positive sign!

This weekend we were surrounded by love from family and friends from several walks of life. This morning at church Regina was so touched by all of the love shown her by the congregation. After church, we had the honor of participating in the 100th birthday celebration of the woman we all call "Grammy". How often in your life do you get to attend something like that! Not only was the celebration for such an accomplished woman a whopping success, we were for the third time this weekend overwhelmed by the expressions of love, support and kindness for Grayson. Here is a picture of Grayson and many of the rest of his cousins with Grammy in 2006.

It was truly a blessed weekend of remembrances, love, friends, family and long overdue hugs. We love you all.

Day 272 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today Grayson had a good day, according to his residential assistant (RA). As he does every Saturday (unless prevented due to behavior issues) he did his grocery shopping this morning. According to Grayson (in other words, unconfirmed!) he went swimming this afternoon.

I am certain that he did his laundry, took out the trash, checked the mail and loaded the dishwasher, because the RA told me. I am also certain that he watched some TV this evening, as he was doing so when I talked to him. His new evening RA did not understand that with the TV on, Grayson just can't focus on anything else, especially a phone conversation. While our conversation was sweet tonight, it was certainly short!

As I mentioned yesterday, we attended the funeral of a dear family friend today. It was heartwarming to see so many long time family friends there. In the slide show presentation shown during the service, there were several photos of my mother with her dear friend. In a flash, I was transported to a time over 16 years ago. There are so many memories that our families have shared, all of them wonderful. Here is a picture of our three children and two of our late friends' grandchildren taken on Easter in 2002. In spite of the loss and the grieving for our friend today, so many people reached out to comfort us and share their concern for Grayson. We were truly touched.

Our time here is short. The saints that have gone before us have shown us the way.

Day 271 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

It is Friday and that means Movie Night. Grayson headed out to the movies but apparently the wait at the theatre was way too much, and he started getting tense. Grayson started having a behavior problem, so the residential assistants (RA) determined that it would be best for all if he when back to the apartment. So he hopped in the van and the activities director (AD), a big fan of Grayson, brought him back and stayed with him for the evening. After Grayson was removed from the area, he started to relax and by the time he got back to the apartment (about 5 minutes away) he was happy again. He watched TV in the apartment with the AD until bedtime and was laughing and having a great time.

I spoke with Grayson tonight and we talked of coming home. I described all of the work that has been done in his room and bathroom. They have been painted, new faucets have been installed, a new light and fan in the bathroom, new shelving in the closet (goes in Monday) and new carpet (after the shelving). I didn't tell him that we installed a grab bar in the shower, nor did I mention the locking med box in the new medicine cabinet. Lots of changes. Grayson said, "Cool!" when I described what was happening.

We will be attending the funeral of a dear friend of our family tomorrow, so we will not be heading up to Bakersfield. We asked the AD to look in on Grayson and make sure that he got out a bit tomorrow. I know that the staff will see to it, and that is why this place continues to be such a wonderful place for Grayson.

Dear family and friends

Today was not a great day for Grayson as he was a bit off his mark. He has had a lot of good days in a row. Actually, it has been over a month since we had an issue of "behavior". Tonight, there was a minor incident. While disappointing for sure, one minor incident in over a month is not bad.

As I mentioned, Grayson was just a bit off his mark today. He did the usual – therapeutic home program, dinner prep and laundry. After dinner he wanted a muffin, and his residential assistant (RA) told him to help himself. Grayson did, and wound up experiencing the muffin from a different perspective. He squeezed it and saw what happened to a muffin when pressure was applied. However, he also got to experience what happens when you make a mess – you get to clean it up! There is goodness in experimentation and clean-up.

Day 269 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today we had a rare glimpse into Grayson's morning routine. It should be no surprise to anyone that knew Grayson that getting out of bed in the morning represents one of the larger challenges of his day. Once up, keeping him from lying down and going back to sleep is another obstacle that needs to be overcome – several times each morning! Today once he got dressed and was on his way to the kitchen to start breakfast prep, things seemed to improve. He ate breakfast then headed over to "transpo" to board the bus to the clinic.

Today Grayson had a full range of therapy, occupational therapy (OT) at 10:00, physical therapy (PT) at 11:00, lunch at 12:00, Speech at 1:00 and OT again at 2:00. He arrived back at the residence at 3:30 and started his PM routine.

I don't need to describe the evening for you, as there was little outside the norm this evening – except for one thing. When I talked to him at 8:00, he was already in bed, but he remembered the fruit that he had with dinner (good!) and he remembered that he spent the day at the clinic and did not go to the adult activity center today. Both of those memories are not "typical" of the new Grayson, so that is exciting.

It is a journey of miles measured in inches, but Grayson is still moving forward!

Day 268 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today was another good day! Grayson did chores (took out the trash, checked the mail, did LOTS of laundry, and mopped the hallway and bathroom floors), did his therapeutic home program (orientation questions, questions on readings, and categorizing objects), and made dinner.

After dinner there was a special movie in the rec center, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Grayson chuckled and laughed all through the movie, according to his residential assistant (RA). This movie reminds me of his final year in Boy Scouts when he and several other older Scouts (16 and 17 year olds) formed a patrol called the Knights (pronounced ka-nig-its). They used just about every gag from this movie, including clapping the coconuts when they moved around as a patrol. The smiles those memories bring.

Yes, it was another good day.

Day 267 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Grayson had a low key evening after he returned home from the clinic. Grayson and his roommate and their residential assistants (RA) went for a walk to the park across the street. They sat on a bench and watched a pick-up soccer game. According to his RA, Grayson was laughing out loud at several of his roommates jokes. It is always fun to hear Grayson laugh these days and the good news is that he does it a lot.

After the soccer match, they left the pitch (field) to return to the residence to prepare dinner – steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. After dinner Grayson watched a little TV before getting ready for bed. As I said – a low key day.

Probably more significant than the "low-keyness" is the fact that Grayson was cooperative and helpful and had no behavior issues this evening. The reason that is more significant than normal is that Grayson had a new RA this evening – someone that he has not worked with in the past. In fact, he has had several new RAs in the past few days. In all cases, Grayson has had no issues. Just a month or so ago, Grayson did not respond well to several of the staff, as they appeared to get on his nerves. Today things just are calmer and he seems content to cooperate and do his chores. Good news indeed!

Day 266 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

Today we made the trek to Bakersfield to visit Grayson. When we arrived, we found him on the couch reading the newspaper. He was happy to see us, dressed for the weather (shorts and flip flops) and ready to go. We headed off for our afternoon adventures.

Grayson was in a great mood. He was calm and engaged, though still limited to generally one or two word answers. We tried to eat lunch at Chipotle but a bus load of female athletes from Azusa Pacific (ironic – Lauren's school!) just pulled in and the line was well into next week. I asked Grayson if he wanted to go to Panda Express and he said "Panda!" So we just walked across the parking lot to a new destination!

After lunch we went to Lowe's to purchase a medicine cabinet, to show Grayson the final paint colors and blinds we had picked for his room and to make sure that he was still good with them. While we were sure he would approve, our purpose was to keep him engaged in the process. When Regina shared some of the improvements with him, Grayson turned to her and said, "Thank you."

After Lowe's we went to Cold Stone for a treat, then back to the residence for a swim. The pool was a nice end to our day together. We tossed a ball and floated in the pool until about 6:00. We talked, played and had some good time together in the cool water.

Grayson has shown some growth these past few weeks. He is much more alert and engaged and much more aware than he was a month ago. This is great news and we hope and pray that growth continues, even at this slow rate.

Unfortunately (only for us) Grayson's residential assistant (RA) was allowed to go home early this evening so we were unable to get any first hand observations.

According to the supervisor who was filling in, Grayson participated in art therapy in the recreation center this evening. When I spoke with him he remembered that he had participated in the activity but couldn't remember what he had worked on. It was only a little after 8:00 and Grayson was in bed listening to the audio book Hitchhiker's Guide. He was unable to divert his attention from the book for more than a couple of seconds and simply stopped answering my questions. I wished him sweet dreams and he said "bye".

Good night sweet prince.

Peace to each of you. Thank you for caring enough to still be following his story.

Day 262 – Grayson’s Journey

Dear family and friends

According to Grayson's residential assistant (RA), today was a "really good day". Grayson has made very good progress over the past month in behavior and cooperation, and today was no exception. The morning staff commented today that Grayson required very little cueing to complete his morning tasks (something that we hear little about simply because of timing). Likewise this evening, he required little cueing to complete his evening chores. The progress we are seeing is encouraging, but needs to be tempered with the fact that he will require waking hour supervision like a small child for the next several years. As long as his cooperation and behavior remain good, supervision will at least be something that we can hire.

I visited one of our Boeing production facilities today, and I saw the sections of an aircraft produced at a facility I had some responsibility for last year. It was really cool to see them installed on an aircraft on that production line. I can't wait to share that story with Grayson when I see him again this weekend.

He also had no behavior problems, which continues to be good news.

Grayson's room and bathroom at our home is now ready for a construction crew to descend upon it in the morning. They will be doing some plaster patching, general repair, painting, and installation of new carpet in the bedroom and grab bars in the bathroom.
